Poetry Workshop with Shagufta Iqbal
Students recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a poetry workshop led by acclaimed poet Shagufta Iqbal. The session encouraged students to explore their creativity, experiment with language and discover how poetry can be inspired by the world around them.
Through a series of engaging activities, students began with free-writing exercises, using prompts based on wonder and imagination. They explored places such as lakes, islands and other landscapes before developing their ideas into original poems.
Students also experimented with a variety of poetic techniques, including word association, imagery and acrostic poetry. They were introduced to methods of linking ideas between lines, where the final word of one line became the opening word of the next, helping them to create flowing and connected pieces of writing.
Drawing inspiration from Shagufta's own work, students explored the use of metaphors, similes and everyday objects as starting points for powerful poetry. The workshop highlighted how ordinary experiences and familiar items can become the basis for creative and meaningful writing.
The session was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their confidence as writers, take creative risks and appreciate the craft of poetry. We were delighted to welcome Shagufta Iqbal to our school and look forward to seeing how students continue to develop the ideas and techniques they explored during this inspiring workshop.
